40mm

40mm aggregates are coarse, crushed stone particles with a nominal maximum size of 40mm, widely used in mass concrete, foundations, roads, and PCC works for their strength and economy.

Grading Limits (IS 383 Standards)
For single-sized 40mm aggregates, sieve analysis requires:

  • 100% passing 40mm sieve.
  • 85-100% passing 63mm.
  • 0-20% passing 20mm; 0-5% passing 4.75mm

20mm

20mm aggregates are coarse crushed stone with a nominal maximum size of 20mm, the most common choice for RCC structures like beams, columns, slabs, and general concrete work due to balanced strength and workability.

Applications

Used in M20-M40 grade concrete; provides good compaction with less voidage than 40mm but more economical than 10mm

20mm aggregates are a staple coarse aggregate in concrete mixes, prized for their optimal size that balances strength, workability, and economy in most structural applications.

Primary Uses
  • RCC Elements: Essential for beams, columns, slabs, and lintels where they surround rebar effectively, providing high compressive strength in M20-M40 grades.
  • General Concrete: Forms the bulk (50-70%) of mixes for foundations, floors, and pavements, reducing voids when combined with 10mm aggregates.
  • Roads and Infrastructure: Used in sub-bases, highways, and drainage layers for compaction and load distribution.
  • Blends seamlessly in standard M20-M30 mixes, outperforming larger sizes in congested pours.
12mm

12mm aggregates are fine coarse crushed stones (nominal max size 12mm) used where higher workability and smoother finishes are needed compared to larger 20mm or 40mm sizes.

Common Uses
  • High-strength concrete for slabs, beams, columns, and precast elements.
  • Plastering, flooring, and masonry for compact, crack-resistant mixes.
  • Road sub-bases, drainage systems, and foundations requiring good flow
6mm

6mm aggregates (often called 6mm jelly stones or plum stones) are the smallest coarse aggregates, bridging fine sand and larger coarse types like 12mm for superior mix flow in specialized concrete.

Common Uses
  • High-grade RCC (M30+), thin slabs, and precast panels needing dense packing.
  • Pumped concrete, grouts, and repairs where segregation must be avoided.
  • Blended with 20mm/12mm (20:40:40 ratio) for optimal grading in columns/beams.
Crusher dust

Crusher dust, also known as quarry dust or stone dust, is a fine byproduct from stone crushing operations, consisting mostly of particles under 4.75mm, often used as a sand substitute in concrete and base layers.

Common Uses
  • Base/sub-base for roads, pathways, and pavers due to high strength and stability.
  • Partial sand replacement (20-40%) in concrete for improved workability and reduced costs, especially with 6mm-20mm aggregates in prior mixes.
